Derealisation and Depersonalisation
Derealisation and depersonalisation aren't the same feeling
The world may feel unreal, or you may feel detached from yourself. STAND DOWN gives each experience its own explanation.
Two different experiences
With derealisation, familiar places can seem dreamlike or visually strange. With depersonalisation, your body, voice or actions may feel distant from you. Either can be frightening.
STAND DOWN teaches that these are distinct experiences within its account of the fear response. It doesn't simply treat them as one vague feeling of detachment.
Why the distinction matters
A description of how it feels may not answer why the sensations happen or why they come with fear. Without an explanation, you may start fearing the sensations themselves.
The full distinction is part of STAND DOWN's audio teaching. The programme goes beyond a list of symptoms without asking you to work out the answer alone.
Checking if things feel normal
You may check a reflection, a familiar room or the way your voice sounds to see if you feel normal again. The checking can follow you into shops, work and conversations.
It's tiring to keep testing your perception, especially when others can't see what you're going through.
Hear the separate explanations
STAND DOWN teaches its explanation through audio sessions you hear in order. It doesn't ask you to test whether the world looks right.
A science video and guided visualisations build on the teaching. CHUCK, your AI programme guide, can help with questions about what you've heard.
Recognising the pattern
- Familiar surroundings feel unreal or dreamlike.
- Your body, voice or reflection feels distant from you.
- You keep checking whether things feel normal.
- You're afraid the feeling won't end.
